Putting Your Own Label on Sunglasses Made in South China - Sunglasses frames and lens blanks laid out on a felt tray

A decent pair of sunglasses is a strange product. The materials might cost very little, yet the thing sits on someone’s face all summer and gets judged like fine furniture. That gap between cost and perceived value is exactly why private label eyewear works so well, and why so many buyers come through Guangzhou each year wanting to import sunglasses from China with their own name on the temple. The branding side is where most of them get surprised, so that’s what this piece is about.

Acetate or injection: decide this before you design anything

Everything downstream depends on the frame material. Injection-molded frames come out of a steel tool in seconds, cost little per unit, and suit bold colors and low retail prices. Acetate frames are cut from sheets of cellulose acetate, shaped, and then tumbled for days in barrels of wood and bamboo chips until the surface takes on that deep, glassy polish. I’ve stood next to those barrels. They rumble like a slow cement mixer, and the workshop smells faintly of vinegar from the acetate itself.

Acetate costs more and takes longer. It also photographs better, feels warmer against the skin, and lets you sell at three or four times the price of an injected frame. Neither choice is wrong. But a logo strategy for a five dollar frame and a thirty dollar frame shouldn’t look the same, so settle the material first.

Who actually makes the frames

Guangdong’s eyewear production isn’t in one town. Shenzhen carries much of the higher-end acetate and metal work, with workshops that have made frames for well-known international labels and have the hand-polishing skills to prove it. Yangjiang and other factory towns handle enormous volumes of injected and sports styles. Guangzhou sits in the middle as the trading and export hub, which is where we operate as a China sourcing agent in Guangzhou, visiting the workshops and pulling the pieces of an order together.

For a first order, the honest question isn’t “who’s the best factory” but “whose existing tooling gets me closest to my design”. Opening a brand-new steel mold is a real investment. Modifying an existing shape, or starting from a factory’s open mold with your own colors and branding, is how most labels sensibly begin.

Six places your brand can live on a pair of sunglasses

Buyers tend to think “logo on the temple” and stop there. There’s more surface than you’d expect:

  • Pad printing or silk screen on the temple arms, the cheapest and most common route.
  • Laser engraving, which reads as premium on both metal and acetate.
  • A metal logo pin or plaque inlaid into acetate, done during pressing.
  • Lens printing, a small mark in the corner of one lens.
  • The core wire inside a clear acetate temple, visible through the material.
  • Interior temple printing for the model name, size and CE style markings.

Each has a different minimum and a different failure mode. Pad printing can rub off if the ink or curing is wrong, so we always fingernail-test printed samples. Metal pins need the right depth or they lift. Ask for a branded sample, not a plain one, before you commit to quantity.

Lenses do the quiet selling

Your customer can’t measure UV400 by looking, but they instantly feel a flimsy hinge or see a wavy reflection in a bad lens. Polarized lenses cost more than tinted polycarbonate and are worth it for anything positioned above the impulse-buy shelf. Mirror coatings, gradient tints and photochromic options all exist at wholesale, with minimums that vary by factory and specification. What I tell buyers: pick two or three lens setups and repeat them across the collection. Every unique lens and frame combination is a line the factory must schedule separately, and complexity is the silent killer of small eyewear orders.

The case costs as much attention as the frame

Unboxing is half the private label game in this category. A microfiber pouch doubles as a cleaning cloth and costs cents. A semi-hard zip case with a debossed logo changes how the whole product feels in the hand. Print suppliers around Guangzhou can do boxes, pouches, cases, cleaning cloths and hang tags in your artwork at sensible quantities, and we usually source these separately from the frame factory because dedicated packaging suppliers simply do it better. This is the part of the project where our brand building support gets used most, from artwork files through to the finished case landing in the same carton as the glasses.

A realistic first order, from where I sit

Say you pick three frame shapes from open molds, two colorways each, one polarized lens spec, printed temples, a pouch and a box. That’s a project a good factory takes seriously and a budget most small brands can survive. Samples first, always worn outdoors for a week, hinges opened a few hundred times. Then production, an in-line check, a final inspection covering print adhesion, lens orientation and hinge tension, and shipment. Boring on purpose. Drama in eyewear orders usually traces back to someone skipping the branded sample stage.

What buyers ask us about eyewear branding

Do I need my own mold to have a real brand?

No, and I’d argue against it for a first collection. Open molds with your own colors, branding and packaging look completely proprietary to the end customer. Cut steel for a custom shape once a style has proven it sells. The mold will still be there when you’re ready, and by then you’ll know exactly what to change.

Will factories mix acetate and injected styles in one order?

A single factory usually specializes in one or the other, so a mixed collection often means two factories. That’s normal here. We consolidate the goods in Guangzhou so both arrive with you as one shipment with one set of export documents.

How do I know the UV protection claim is true?

Have it tested. Third-party labs test lenses against the standards your market uses, and the reports are inexpensive relative to the risk of shipping sunglasses that fail. Reputable factories expect the request. If a supplier gets cagey about lens testing, that tells you something useful early.

Thinking about an eyewear line of your own? We’ve been on the ground in Guangzhou since 2007, we can walk you through frame workshops in person, and we’ll sit with you while you compare acetate against injection with the actual products on the table. Reach out through the contact form or WhatsApp and we’ll take it from there.
